To continue my momentum in between the time I submitted the studies and the beginning of the final piece I painted five 12” x 12” canvases.
48” x 48”, acrylic on linen on aluminum stretchers, (blue)
Six different blues painted in alternating grids will make up the ground. This is how I get to blue.
Plans for the final piece
The final studies have been reviewed. I will create the final piece in the composition style of #7 with the color palette of #8. (pictured below)
Final Studies
12 x 12 inches, acrylic and gouache on canvas, 2021
Color Studies, 12" x 12", acrylic on canvas
I began work on the eight studies for the final painting. You can see their progression below. We will use these studies to lock down an image for the final painting. Please let me know if there is an image that speaks to you.
Stretching and Gessoing Studies
Here are a couple of videos of me preparing the studies.

I’m looking at these paintings to inform the look and texture of the final piece. I will start by sketching different ways to change the composition from a portrait to a square.
Poetry
I returned to the Harding Loevner careers page video and put together this new poem:

Assembling the 12 inch stretcher bars
The stretcher bars for my 12” x 12” paintings finally arrived. I put them together ASAP. These frames will be supports for eight square paintings I will produce with the 48 x 48 inch commission. I work on more than one painting at a time. These smaller paintings will provide a space to experiment and check-in with you about what is working before I apply it to the 48” x 48” painting.
One Easel
Three paintings and one easel.
In Studio
Today I organized and cleaned my brushes and made room for the new paintings in the studio.

I cut ten canvases to stretch over 12” wooden stretcher bars for the studies I’ll be making. They look nice in the north light of my studio floor.
